1. Tell us about your business/for purpose organization (how long have you been in business, what is your specialty, products or services, how many employees you have, etc.):
Hope Paige was originally founded to create awareness products for charities. After one of those charity meetings (JDRF), a concerned mother stopped me and asked if we would design a bracelet for her daughter who has diabetes. Her daughter, Kristen, who was learning to drive, refused to wear any of the old fashioned chain style medical bracelets on the market. The mother explained that if her daughter’s blood sugar was out of control, she could become disoriented and possibly appear drunk or drugged. What if she ended up in a police station instead of being immediately taken to a hospital? She looked me in the eye and I couldn’t say no – as long Kristen helped in developing the new design. That way we were sure she would wear it. With her input and a lot of research on safety, the first structured fashionable medical ID bracelet was born in 2002.
Today Hope Paige offers more than 150 styles of fashionable medical ID jewelry for men, women and children that can be customized for any medical condition or simply with emergency contact information.
We recently found inspiration during a trip to Asia and saw people wearing LED safety products. This would be the catalyst for a new company, 4id, and a new product line of LED-enhanced safety items – lighted adjustable bands for runners, walkers, bikers, campers, and pets. Our Power Spurz, Power Wrapz and Power Armz, the first of the 4id line, launched early last year at trade shows.
2. What makes your company/organization leaders in your industry?
As a small business, we have the opportunity to really get to know our customers. We take time to build relationships with each person that reaches out to us. Exceptional customer service is our top priority – it’s our goal to make every customer happy, not just satisfied.
We are also dedicated to giving back; we work closely with charities in order to help other organizations raise awareness of their causes. Some of the charities we have partnered with include JDRF, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Kids with Food Allergies, and many more! We are constantly working to raise awareness about the importance of wearing emergency identification.
3. Who or what has influenced you (book, movie, person, other company/for purpose organization)?
I have always been influenced by my father who lived by the premise that we should utilize our time and energy in life to do good things, especially in the area of helping others.
4. What key qualities do you look for in your employees/team?
Hope Paige’s work is done with a strong heart and soul toward the people who need to wear these products. So much of how we do business is about the relationship and about the people. We look for employees that mirror those beliefs that enhance customer service.
5. Words of advice for others growing their business/for purpose organization?
Have the full picture in mind but take the steps one at a time. No matter what your vision, don’t let yourself get overwhelmed by all of the steps needed to get to your goal.
Fill your team with the right people. If your choice is to grow a business and funds are limited you have to be very selective in building your team with the right talent.
Have fun. If you are passionate about what you do, each and every day will provide an opportunity that allows you to become better while doing what you love.
