Kevin Price, Host of the Price of Business on Business Talk 1110 AM KTEK (on Bloomberg’s home in Houston) recently interviewed Michael Maurizio.

About the interviewee

Michael Maurizio is founder, President and CEO of Fortus Healthcare Resources, a staffing firm that places healthcare professionals throughout the country, as well as internationally. Fortus also provide a series of consulting and business development services.

Mike began his recruiting career in 1988 heading up the software sales
recruiting department for Carter/Mac Kay in Boston. Before that, he held various sales positions for four Fortune 100 companies.

In 1993, Mike started Fortus as a one-desk specialty firm, pioneering
recruitment and placement of nephrology professionals for dialysis centers.
In 2006, Fortus expanded into travel nursing. In 2008, Fortus added an
International Division based in Germany, complementing the success and
industry expertise within its domestic operations while creating a
full service solution for healthcare providers worldwide. More recently, the company established a component specializing in Perioperative and Ambulatory Surgery Centers and its newest addition is a Healthcare HR Management Division.

Tell me about your firm (number of employees, location, type of companies you work with, etc.).
Fortus has 40 employees at our headquarters in Utica, NY. In addition, we have several employees at satellite offices throughout the country and at our International Division in Germany. Our Travel Division consists of 60 full-time travel nurses who typically work 13 week assignments before moving on to another location. Many of our healthcare clients rely on travel nurses to help meet immediate staffing needs resulting from increased demand for services, staff retirements, short-term absences and various other scenarios.

Both of our Travel and Direct Hire Divisions are adding team members on a regular basis.

 

What type and size of companies do you have as clients?
The list of Fortus clients includes healthcare providers of all sizes, from sole proprietor clinics to national healthcare systems operating multiple facilities.

We serve hospitals, dialysis, Ambulatory Surgery Centers and many other levels of care.

Mergers and Acquisitions are becoming increasingly common in the modern healthcare landscape. The Clinical Practice Consulting group at Fortus assists with clinic divestitures, acquisitions and practice sales.

Regardless of size, we’re able to provide individualized service to each client. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach for healthcare staffing and consulting. That’s true now more than ever. Healthcare providers are dealing with current and project increases in demand brought on by an aging population, the Affordable Care Act and other factors, many of which are unique to an individual facility or geographic region.

 

What comes to mind when you see this topic?

 

Fortus Healthcare Resources has been in the Inc. 5000 in both 2012 and 2013 and I’m confident we’ll do so again this year, on the road to the Fortune 500. Planning for continued development in size and scope is essential in today’s challenging economic development. While the bulk of the country’s economic growth has occurred within the small business sector, I am also keenly aware that many small businesses ultimately fail. Sometimes it’s due to circumstances that are beyond anyone’s control but, often, it’s because C-level executives have been reactive instead of proactive. I try to stay ahead of the curve, anticipating changing conditions and the needs of our clients.
What are the best practices when it comes to this issue?
Diversification is essential to business prosperity. I am always considering different areas of business. The Fortus business model is built on a solid foundation, but it’s also adaptable to respond to the ever-changing global marketplace particularly in healthcare. That’s how Fortus is able to provide the best possible services to healthcare clients and candidates, while also attracting new business relationships and potential sources of revenue.
