It is estimated that hiring the wrong person for a business can cost up to 30 percent of the employee’s salary in the first year. If you are a small company, it can also be a threat and success to your business. You will want to do all you can to protect your brand and your business so hiring the right employee is essential. It doesn’t have to be a challenge or take up too much of your time if you follow the steps below.

· Job Description

Before you set about looking for the right person, start analyzing what you want them to do. 

This is a great of setting out the requirements and specifications for the job description. This means noting down the duties, responsibilities and skills you would want any potential employee to have. Know what you want and why will help with the advertisement and job application too. 

 

· Recruitment Process

Decide how you wish to go about recruiting an employee. You could choose to advertise the post in the local paper, online, or you could opt for a labour hire agency. There are a lot of agencies out there, and ones which recruit in specific industries; for example if you are looking for someone with building skills, then opt for a construction labour hire agency. This is an excellent option for your business and yourself, especially if you don’t have much time to spend on the recruitment process.

 

· Use a Checklist Matrix

When you are presented with completed application forms, use a checklist matrix when reading each application. Tick off when the person has the skills and competencies you are looking for. This allows you to keep a track of the employees, which may be suitable for the position.

 

· Check Credentials

This means looking closing at the experience and references the candidate has completed on their form. Check any supporting documentation, follow up on references to ensure what they are telling you is indeed correct.

· Interview Preparation

Asking the right questions at the interview stage will help you determine if the candidate is right for your company. Ask the same questions to each candidate and give them an opportunity to ask you questions. 

· Follow up

When you extend an offer for the position to a candidate, ensure you state it is on receipt of satisfactory references. Always follow up references. You don’t want to hire someone without first checking these. The job offer should also list out any probation period of employment as well as listing the duties, salary and holidays.
