Whether you are working remotely from home or are crushing it at building your own business, the thought of burnout becomes less of a hypothetical and more of a real possibility. We find ourselves having a difficult time managing stress or increased anxiety throughout our days.

Sleep becomes more of a struggle to obtain, and before we know it, we’ve hit the metaphorical wall. In order to cope with it all, more people are looking for natural and holistic ways to manage their mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Here are six tips to handle your stress before you find yourself with a major case of burnout.

Meditation

One of the biggest reasons why we experience burnout is because we don’t allow our bodies or minds to rest. We keep on grinding through our daily lives without giving ourselves permission to stop moving and stop thinking. The culture we live in focuses on success being a means of productivity. If we are not producing, we are not doing enough.

Through meditation, it trains our minds and bodies to slow down. We are forced in these moments to focus on our breathing. When our bodies become stressed or anxious, we take fast and shallow breaths. This limits the amount of oxygen our body needs and puts us in a state of hypoxia.

Practicing meditation realigns our priorities to think about our breathing and less about our productivity. It allows our bodies to get the necessary oxygen to reduce our stress levels before we reach that point of burnout.

This could be any type of movement such as running, dancing, walking, lifting weights, or even jumping up and down. As long as we allow the energy to be exerted and moved throughout bodies, we can release some of the extra tension that is built up.

Stick to Your Boundaries

One of the most important things we can do is to learn how to effectively say “no” to the things that do not serve us anymore. Burnout happens when we don’t create healthy boundaries. We take on more than we are able to handle and never allow ourselves to exercise our right to reserve our energy for the things that will serve us.

Start by evaluating the parts of your life where you are spreading yourself too thin. Maybe it’s important for you to decline that dinner party this weekend because you haven’t had a night to yourself. Perhaps you need to say no to taking on that extra home project your friend needs help with because you are completely out of energy.

Figure out how you can start saying no a little bit more. It isn’t selfish. If anything, it’s incredibly selfless because when you do decide to say yes, you will be showing up as a better version of yourself.
