Edge Velocity Corporation was founded in late 2004, and is a premier provider, developer and manufacturer of highly specialized mobile IP wireless mesh routing technology, driven by its own proprietary software, the Edge Interlock ™ Router Suite. We enable virtually immediate communication and delivery of secure voice, video and data between stationary and fast moving users in challenging indoor and outdoor environments.

Our technology transforms the performance of users in many distinct markets– historically these have included First Responders, Critical Infrastructure and Transportation. We create networks that deliver key outputs for our customers; which in our view means reliable communications that enhances the security of critical assets both people and infrastructure. Our technology platform supports the growing trend of people and things as part of the Internet of Things (IOT) and provides the capturing of data that provides first-responders with better decision-making capabilities typically in the harshest of conditions, and the most urgent of situations.

Edge Velocity markets a comprehensive set of wireless IP solutions known as the Edge Interlock™ Suite. Our proprietary technology readily interfaces to unique customer technology through its Linux operating system and its application of the 802.11s wireless mesh standard. The Edge Velocity family of products includes:

  • Edge Intelligent Base Station (IBS), a fixed outdoor wireless router that provides the “core mesh cloud” of saturation-averse, secure high-bandwidth 802.11 networks.
  • Edge Vehicle Mounted Router (VMR), a rugged, compact unit that communicates voice, real-time video and data at high speeds.
  • Edge Rapid Deploy Router (RDR), a compact, battery-powered lightweight router housed in a rugged case along with multiple radios, flat-panel antenna and high-definition video camera that enables communications within the heart of the incident area.
  • Edge Velocity Mobile Datapath Optimizer (EVMDO), a multipurpose wireless gateway router that bridges commercial cellular, secure Wi-Fi and fixed local area networks to create wide area networks.

What Makes Us Unique

Edge Velocity believes that its technology platform is an essential component of the next wave of the Internet – what many experts refer to as the Internet of Things (IoT). Over our history as a company we have had many successes have involved providing critical communications capabilities when traditional alternatives are either unavailable or insufficient.  Some of our early successes include;

Fire Department of New York (FDNY) – a contract with Raytheon to provide secure wireless communications capabilities for the company’s CommandPad, an incident management system to allow first responders to share critical data in extreme urban environments.

FDNY Emergency Medical Services Division – Edge enabled FDNY Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) to interconnect to the New York Health Information Exchange, which displays specific patient and existing treatment records directly to the EMT’s administering patient care, while en route to the hospital.

Federal Transit Administration – Edge Velocity was awarded a grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), a division of the Department of Transportation, to test and evaluate sensor and tracking technologies.

The significance of these early successes was that they proved that Edge Velocity technology platform could successfully operate in a “machine to machine” (M2M) environment, which involves communications between non-living things, such as devices and sensors under the most severe environments.  Our technology has been comprehensively tested in the field over the last 7 years.

What Has Influenced Us?

When the Twin Towers collapsed on September 11th, the Marriot Hotel at 3 World Trade Center nestled between them was destroyed.   I had been booked into the hotel for the evening of September 10th but my business trip had been rescheduled at the very last minute to the following week.  In addition a colleague’s son was on board the ill-fated Flight 93, which was flown into the ground near Shanksville, PA. These events changed the course of my life.

As information emerged detailing the facts surrounding these tragic events, it became disturbingly clear that first responders did not have the technology to communicate with each other at a time when they desperately needed it.

I was astonished they didn’t have the advanced technology to effectively support their missions, and this became a turning point of my career. I knew I wanted to focus on doing what I could to improve security in our country and to improve communications, especially for our first responders.

Key qualities we  look for in our employees/team

We look for many of the things most emerging companies look for, such as knowledge and experience.  Beyond those traits, however, we look for people with passion, integrity and excitement about what we do, and the life-saving results we deliver.  These traits don’t appear on resumes, and can’t be learned at school, but we have been fortunate to build an existing team that reflects these attributes.

Words of advice for others growing their business/for purpose organization

First and foremost, keep your company moving forward at all costs, and don’t get complacent. Everyday someone is out there trying to catch up to you.  Lead the industry you are in. Make it your mission. Also allow yourself to have fun. If you don’t enjoy what you do then you will not succeed.

From a more practical standpoint, as today’s business climate is becoming more complex each day, and when competing against larger players having sound legal advice is critical. Many entrepreneurs make the mistake of going it alone when they should have engaged professional legal advice.  My advice is to ensure your team has good legal counsel in certain fields such as; Employment Law, Patent, Contracts and a general Corporate Attorney.  Each business owner has a fiduciary duty to properly protect the assets of their company, and they should not be deficient in this area.
