Chris Kidd, Financial Coach and Contributor on the Price of Business on Business Talk 1110 AM KTEK (on Bloomberg’s home in Houston) recently interviewed Steven Olenick, a leading sports & entertainment attorney. Steven Olenick is a partner at Kantor Davidoff, a boutique law firm with offices in New York, Florida, and Connecticut. Among sports, media & entertainment, Steven also practices in the areas of corporate, criminal, and family law, as well as intellectual property, trusts and estates, and more.

Steven OlenickQ: Tell me about your firm.

A:  Kantor Davidoff is a full-service law firm strategically positioned to handle all types of sophisticated transactions, litigations, or any other type of legal need.

Q: When did you know you wanted to be an attorney, and what made you decide to work in the areas of sports and entertainment?

A:  I have always had my eye on becoming an attorney and intellectually curious with learning about the law.  As a former athlete, combining the law with sports and entertainment was a natural fit.

Q: You also work in corporate and family law. Is that mainly with clients from the sports and entertainment industries or does that include business owners and individuals outside of the sports and entertainment world?

A:  My practice is divided up between sports and entertainment and other areas of the law and it does include clients outside of the sports and entertainment industries – I work with entrepreneurs, business executives, business owners, along with sophisticated wealth managers and accountants.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your work?

A:  The pressure of the job.  The law is always changing and clients often times have tight deadlines.  I look at the practice of law, like sports – you always need to practice your craft and get better on a daily basis.  Constant learning is a must and you always have to be ahead of the learning curve in terms of knowledge.

Q: What types of situations do you deal with most often?

A:  I am always dealing with strict deadlines.  Whether it be a complicated trust and estates matter, tax, corporate, real estate, or litigious dispute, deadlines are always approaching and problems need to be solved or rectified.

Q: What are the advantages of having great legal counsel like your firm?

A:  You know you are protected and problems have been vetted by extremely intelligent individuals.  Collaborating with like-minded professionals allows the client to be better served and represented.
