Lindsey Gardner- What You Need to Know About PEOs

Kevin Price, Host of the Price of Business on Business Talk 1110 AM KTEK (on Bloomberg’s home in Houston) recently interviewed Lindsey Gardner.

About the interviewee

Lindsey Gardner is the President of NaplesHR, a human resources and industrial psychology consulting firm in Naples, FL. She is also the human resources manager for Genesis Employee Leasing in Punta Gorda, FL.  She holds an MBA in human resources management from Ashford University and is currently completing dissertation research on candidate selection for her doctorate in industrial-organizational psychology.

Tell me about your firm (number of employees, location, type of companies you work with, etc.).
NaplesHR in Naples, FL provides industry leading human resources and industrial-organizational psychology consultation to clients across the US who want to leverage talent, improve organizational efficiency and employee performance. Genesis Employee Leasing is located in Punta Gorda, FL. They can work with any sized Florida business to provide the full range of PEO services at competitive rates with incomparable client service. Clients range from medical offices, skilled trades, clerical, manufacturing and more.

What type and size of companies do you have as clients?

Our client company size ranges from 2-200, with the average being about 50 employees. They work across a number of industries in Florida ranging from administrative services, medical offices, skilled trades and more. Often times, these companies have no internal human resources department; however we will also work with their team as consulting experts.

What comes to mind when you see this topic?

The biggest benefit of a PEO is saving resources (time, money, staff hours, risk management, etc.). Genesis can save a Florida businesses up to 30% comparing their own premiums for Worker’s compensation and SUTA rate.

We like to say that we allow businesses to focus on profits not paperwork. What most owners want, is the ability to focus on their core business activities. Honestly, what businesses owner started their company because they love paperwork?

A client’s core operations remain the same and they continue to hire and fire at will. We are the administrative employer and they are the worksite employer. We process payroll, take care of the applicable tax filings, provide pay as you go worker’s compensation, a full range of HR support (background screening, drug testing, unemployment claims, FMLA, etc) and benefits packages that would typically be too difficult or costly for a small business to offer.

What are the best practices when it comes to this issue?

Clients have to be willing to have a partnership, not just a payroll vendor and PEOs aren’t for everyone. We require that you enroll new employees before their first day on the job and will “fire” clients that break the law or operate without regard for safety or FLS compliance.
A good PEO will give to a firm quote and not lock you into a contract.

Make sure you find a full service PEO. At a full service PEO, clients will also benefit from free tools, templates and handbooks, with on-call hr consulting. Typically a small company has no internal HR and the owner or an admin acts as the defacto HR department for administration only. They often have little or no experience or understanding using government forms and ensuring their practices are compliant. Genesis will process payroll, take care of the applicable tax filings, provide pay as you go worker’s compensation, a full range of HR support.
