We had an opportunity to showcase the Department of Texas American Legion.

Butch has been a member of American Legion Post 490 in Houston, TX  since 1986. He has served the post in various capacities including 6 terms as post commander. Butch also has served the American Legion in other capacities to include 22nd District Commander from 2002-2004, State of Texas Vice Commander from 2004-2005, State of Texas Commander from 2006-2007, and on various commissions at the National level.  Butch is currently the 22nd District Judge Advocate and member of Post 490’s board of trustees.

Butch was named the State’s “Legionnaire of the Year” in 2005. Butch is currently serving the Legion at State level as a member of the Department Executive Committee and represents the Department of Texas at the National Organization as the National Executive  Committeeman.

About Butch Sparks

Butch SparksButch was born in Asheville, North Carolina on August 14, 1944.  He has two sisters who are still live in the Asheville area. Butch’s father who served his country in the Army Air Corp during WW II passed away in 1992.   His mother passed away in July of 2009. Unlike his stay close to home sisters, Butch joined the military to see the world after graduating from High School in 1962. Butch had various assignments in his 22 year active career including service as a medic in Vietnam and in Korea during the Pueblo Crisis. Butch retired from the United States Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) in 1984.  His best memory of his service was the many friends he made throughout his travels.

After retiring from the Air Force, Butch went to work for Exxon. Butch spent 22 years with the company with various assignments and retired as a research center manager in 2006.

Butch is married to Lynn Sparks, who served in the United States Marine Corps. Lynn  also is an active Legionnaire and served as State Commander of The American Legion, Department of Texas from 2014-2015. Butch and Lynn reside in Pearland, TX. They have 3 sons, and a daughter, 4 grandsons, and 3 granddaughters.

Butch believes the upside of being active in  The American Legion is seeing all the good things we do for our veterans, their families, the children and youth, and the surrounding communities.
