Behind every successful online brand is a system that keeps it running. Shelton Powell has built his career around creating those systems.
As the founder and CEO of Cart Capital, Powell has spent the past several years helping ecommerce businesses develop the operational foundation needed to grow. Rather than chasing trends or quick wins, he focuses on processes, infrastructure, and long-term thinking. That approach has helped Cart Capital contribute to the development of hundreds of ecommerce brands while building a team of more than 40 people.
His career reflects a simple belief: businesses become stronger when the systems behind them become stronger.
Who Is Shelton Powell?
Shelton Powell was born and raised in Ottawa, Canada, with Jamaican roots that continue to influence how he approaches leadership and business.
Growing up, his father regularly took the family to Jamaica, not simply to visit relatives, but to provide perspective.
“Those trips weren’t vacations—they were perspective,” Powell says. “They gave me a deep understanding of what I had, what I was responsible for, and what I needed to create for myself.”
As a student, Powell admits academics were never his strongest interest. He enjoyed making people laugh and initially focused on football because it provided structure and a clear goal.
Eventually, he realized his passion was somewhere else.
“Watching my peers train, I realized I didn’t have that same fire,” he says. “I wasn’t willing to pretend otherwise.”
How Shelton Powell Found His Direction
Everything changed when Powell discovered ecommerce at 16.
While classmates concentrated on school assignments, he spent his time learning how online businesses operated. He researched products, built websites, and experimented with ecommerce brands long before entrepreneurship became his full-time career.
“I was that kid in the back of the class running ecommerce brands,” he says. “Nobody around me saw it. But I saw it in myself, and that was enough.”
His entrepreneurial journey began with a paycheck.
At 15, Powell joined the YIPI co-op program through the Ottawa Police Service. Instead of spending his earnings, he invested them into his first ecommerce venture.
Over the next several years, he worked at the YMCA, Lone Star, Five Guys, and Bell Canada.
Each position served the same purpose.
“I wasn’t building a career in those jobs,” Powell says. “I was funding a vision.”
Along the way, he learned customer service, operations, teamwork, and how businesses function behind the scenes.
Why Shelton Powell Built Cart Capital
In April 2020, at just 19 years old, Powell left Bell Canada to pursue entrepreneurship full time.
The decision came during one of the most uncertain business environments in recent history.
Instead of slowing down, he accelerated.
He began helping influencers launch merchandise brands while developing ecommerce websites and operational systems for business owners.
As his experience grew, he recognized a common challenge.
Many companies knew how to generate attention. Far fewer knew how to build operations that could support long-term growth.
That insight became the foundation for Cart Capital.
Today, the company provides ecommerce infrastructure, including supplier relationships, backend operations, payment processing, media buying, creative strategy, and business systems.
“Real brands are built through systems, not hype,” Powell says.
The company’s focus is not simply launching brands. It is creating businesses that can continue operating efficiently as they grow.
Leading Through Systems Instead of Shortcuts
Powell believes operational discipline is one of the biggest competitive advantages in ecommerce.
He often points out that growth can expose weaknesses that remain hidden when companies are small.
“Most businesses fail operationally before they fail financially,” he says.
Rather than viewing setbacks as failures, he sees them as opportunities to improve.
“Every time systems have broken, I call it a transitional period,” Powell explains. “It forces you to identify weaknesses you wouldn’t have otherwise seen.”
That philosophy has shaped his leadership style.
He stays closely involved in operations because he believes leaders should understand how the business functions at every level.
“The lessons don’t come from courses or books,” he says. “They come from building, making mistakes, and being honest about what needs to improve.”
Building More Than Companies
Although Cart Capital remains his primary focus, Powell continues expanding into other areas that support ecommerce operators.
He is developing a product sourcing and fulfillment company designed to strengthen supply chain infrastructure, along with a growth infrastructure agency focused on helping businesses improve operational systems and revenue processes.
Outside of business, he is building a digital community for people looking beyond traditional education and career paths.
He regularly shares lessons through YouTube and educational content focused on entrepreneurship, systems thinking, and operational leadership.
“The goal is simple,” Powell says. “Make sure the next generation has more options than I felt I had.”
A Career Focused on Long-Term Impact
Shelton Powell’s career has never followed a conventional path.
He learned through experience instead of waiting for perfect conditions. He built businesses while working traditional jobs. He focused on systems while many others focused on appearances.
His definition of success reflects that practical mindset.
“Success, to me, is simple,” Powell says. “It’s the ability to define a clear outcome and then achieve or exceed it. Everything else is noise.”
That philosophy continues to guide every decision he makes.
For Powell, leadership is not measured by attention or recognition. It is measured by building systems that create lasting value, solving meaningful problems, and leaving stronger foundations for the people and businesses that follow.
