How a Texas law firm turned bold litigation into a model for corporate accountability.
Starting Small, Thinking Big
When The Buzbee Law Firm was founded in Houston, it didn’t aim to be just another player in the legal field. From the start, the mission was different: take on the toughest, highest-stakes cases—and win them with purpose.
The firm’s founder, Tony Buzbee, brought discipline from his years as a Marine and a sharp legal mind shaped by his time at the University of Houston. That mix of structure and strategy formed the backbone of the firm’s approach.
“Preparation beats luck,” Buzbee has said. “Whether it’s the courtroom or the boardroom, if you’re not ready, you’ve already lost.”
Winning Cases That Shift Public Expectations
Over the years, The Buzbee Law Firm has built a national reputation for large-scale verdicts and settlements. One of the most talked-about was the 2025 case Loree v. TNT Crane & Rigging, where the firm represented the family of a man killed in a crane accident on a job site.
TNT offered $6.9 million to settle. The jury responded with a $640 million verdict, including $480 million in punitive damages.
“The jury didn’t just want to pay the family,” Buzbee said. “They wanted to say, ‘This didn’t have to happen—and you didn’t care enough to stop it.’”
It was one of the largest verdicts of its kind and a turning point for how corporate negligence is judged—both by the courts and the public.
Applying the Legal Mindset to Business
Success in litigation gave Buzbee the tools—and mindset—to branch out. Through Buzbee Properties, the firm expanded into real estate development across Texas and Florida. Other ventures followed in energy and commercial property.
But it wasn’t about being a businessman for the sake of it.
“It’s the same logic,” Buzbee said. “You examine the risk, understand your leverage, and prepare better than the other side.”
Lessons From a Firm That Plays to Win
The Buzbee Law Firm has become a blueprint for how legal practice can go beyond casework and impact entire industries. Their philosophy is built on a few key ideas:
-
Narrative wins trials: Jurors need to see the human side. “You don’t just show them numbers—you show them birthdays missed, futures lost.”
-
Preparation drives results: The firm builds its cases like campaigns, with research, rehearsals, and clear storylines.
-
Big risks can lead to real reform: The Loree case led to more than a verdict—it sparked safety reviews across the industry.
-
Guard your reputation: “We’ve turned down more cases than we’ve taken,” the firm says. “The wrong case can cost you more than the right one can earn.”
Taking the Conversation Further: The Tony Buzbee Podcast
In 2025, the firm launched The Tony Buzbee Podcast, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the cases, conflicts, and causes shaping the American legal system.
“We wanted to pull the curtain back,” Buzbee explained. “People see the verdict, but not the work behind it. The podcast gives us space to talk about that, and a lot more.”
From legal strategy to business accountability and leadership lessons, the podcast adds a new voice to Buzbee’s growing platform. It’s also a space where everyday listeners can learn how systems work—and how they can use them.
Looking Ahead: Accountability As a Long Game
As the firm continues to grow, it’s staying close to its founding values: prepare thoroughly, act boldly, and always aim for impact over headlines.
“We’re not trying to be everywhere,” Buzbee said. “But in the cases we take, we want to matter. We want the outcome to change something—not just for our clients, but for others down the line.”
With high-profile verdicts, a growing portfolio, and now a platform that reaches well beyond the courtroom, The Buzbee Law Firm is showing what it looks like when legal practice becomes long-term leadership.
