Nowadays, when you use the services of a web design company, you expect them to do more than simply design your website. They need to market it effectively if it is going to be a success. There are various different strategies companies can use to do this, ranging from search engine optimization to email marketing campaigns. A healthy mix of all techniques is usually the best approach, and one must is to use social media marketing.

However, in order to use social media properly, you need to figure out what sort of platforms you should be targeting, and that is what we are going to look at in this post. After all, you cannot set your business up on every possible platform.

What are the most popular and useful social media platforms for businesses?

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • Pinterest
  • Google+
  • Instagram

Should I open an account on all six platforms?

The short answer to this question would be no. In most cases, this is not advised. It’s much better to pick a few platforms that are going to be beneficial for your business. You can then perfect your social media presence on these platforms to reap optimum rewards. If you were to open six social media accounts across different platforms, you would find this extremely difficult to manage, and it would only dilute the effectiveness of them.

What social media platforms should you use?

This depends on your business and your consumer base. The only social media platform that is beneficial for virtually all companies is Facebook. Aside from this, it depends on who you want to attract and the type of content you want to use. Take Pinterest as a prime example; this is a social media site that is based on photographs and it is highly female-dominated. In fact, 84 percent of Pinterest users are female. This makes it the ideal place for fashion companies, homeware stores, jewelers, and such like. It’s an extremely powerful platform, being the third most popular social media site, however, it has a targeted audience and this needs to be considered carefully.

The same can be said for LinkedIn, which is a content-orientated platform and is not suitable for companies that are targeting people under the age of 24 years old. Professionals like David Sherrer will find a good place on LinkedIn. Twitter is ideal for those posting frequently, such as marketing companies and sports businesses. To get a good indication of where your business fits, do your research and see what sites your competitors are using too.

The bottom line

Having a social media presence is essential, but you need to make sure it is effective and on the right platforms if you are going to see real results. Therefore, the first thing that you need to do is find out where your consumer base is. Therefore, understanding your target audience and then researching the demographics of the social media sites you are considering are of a huge importance.
